Travelling with your pet from Great Britain (England, Scotland, or Wales) the documents you’ll need depend on your destination.
For trips to Northern Ireland or EU countries, Great Britain is treated as a third country under EU law. This means pets will need an Animal Health Certificate (AHC), issued by us or an official veterinarian.
The AHC allows one trip to the EU or Northern Ireland, onward travel within the EU, and return to the UK within four months. Your pet must be microchipped and have a rabies vaccination given at least 21 days before travel. Dogs travelling to certain countries, including Northern Ireland, Ireland, Finland, Malta, and Norway, also need tapeworm treatment 1 to 5 days before entry. Travel must take place via an approved route.
For countries outside the EU and Northern Ireland, such as the USA, Australia, or Japan, travel requirements vary.
In most cases, you’ll need an Export Health Certificate (EHC) along with an import permit and a rabies titre blood test carried out at least three months before departure. Some countries may also require quarantine on arrival.
Pets must be microchipped, have an up-to-date rabies vaccination, and may need further treatments depending on the country’s regulations. Documents must be completed by an official vet and, in some cases, authorised by the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA).
